Whistling Man Schooner Company offers cruises aboard the Friend Ship. She is a traditional gaff-rigged sloop designed by Maine shipbuilders who needed stout little ships to handle a lot of weight and sail comfortably for all the lobstering and cod fishing they did in the age of sail. Today, Friend Ship is the only sailing vessel on Lake Champlain certified by the U.S. Coast Guard for passenger service. She is crewed by sailors who want to share their love of Lake Champlain with you. We have received excellence awards from TripAdvisor and glowing reviews in travel magazines and websites. We hope you will join us for a sail on Lake Champlain.
Captain Mathias Dubilier - Owner
I’ve been sailing all my life on waters all over Europe and up-and-down the Atlantic from Maine to Puerto Rico in everything from dinghies and windsurfers to the grand windjammers of Maine. I undertook a fantastical three-year voyage during which I sailed from my home waters of Lake Champlain across the Atlantic and all over the Mediterranean. I’ve been living in Vermont for almost 40 years. I love Lake Champlain and Vermont.

I hold a U.S. Coast Guard 100-ton Master Mariner’s license. Your safety and enjoyment while on board are my priorities.
Bill O'Connor - Captain
As the son of  US Navy parents, I grew up around some of the major ports of the US and Europe. My passion for all things nautical developed as I followed my dad on all kinds of seagoing vessels. I worked my way through college aboard a New Orleans tug boat, and have captained a number of vessels up and down the East coast, and once across the Atlantic.

Now I have dropped anchor in Burlington, one of the most beautiful and historic places in the world, and I enjoy sharing my love and passion for Lake Champlain.
Evan Wing - First Mate
My name is Evan and I am 22 yars old; I've been sailing on Lake Champlain for as long as I can remember. When I'm not crewing on the Friend Ship, I am usually either writing, hiking, or sailing my own boat in the Champlain Islands. I hope to eventually earn my captain's license, and continue my sailing career on the ocean as well as Lake Champlain.
Hannah Langsdale - Deckhand
Ahoy there! My name is Hannah and I am a deckhand on the Friend Ship. Could I have gotten any luckier? I love my job. In the 3 years that I have lived in Burlington I have fallen in love with our town, Lake Champlain, and sailing. I love to travel (writing this right now from Costa Rica), but there is something about Vermont that I always look forward to coming home.
I grew up in rural Maryland and went up north to study biology at St. Lawrence University.  There I learned to love the outdoors. I went hiking in the Adirondack Mountains and cross country skiing any chance I could get, even if it meant braving subzero winter temperatures! The summer off after I graduated I biked across the country from New Hampshire to Vancouver, CA with 24 other people. Organized by Bike & Build and powered by our fundraising efforts along the way, we were able to donate over $80,000 to affordable housing organizations!
Moving to Burlington was a natural next step for me. I was drawn to its abundant nature, swimming spots, friendly people, great food, and even better beer.  I would be so honored to share what I love about this special place with you aboard the Friend Ship!

Zoe Dubilier - Administration
You won't meet me on the boat, but if you give us a call for any reason, I'll most likely be on the other end! I handle our in-office business. Reservations, web traffic, emails, payroll, I'm your girl. I'm a Vermont native, having grown up in Franklin County. I've been sailing with my father on Lake Champlain since I was a child, and can't imagine a more beautiful lake to call my home waters.
